Rewire and future proof your home

To rewire or not to rewire that is the question.

Did you know that more than 15% of all domestic fires in the UK are caused by electrical faults?

In the UK alone, more than approximately 8000 house fires are started as a result of faulty wiring or malfunctioning electric circuits. Unfortunately, many of these fires result in serious injuries and even fatalities, and we know that your family’s safety is of the utmost importance.

The fact is that there is no set time frame for rewiring your house, but that certainly isn’t to say that you should be complacent as your household electrics do require maintenance.

As a rule if your home was built more than 25 years ago it is likely that you need to have it rewired as the PVC twin and earth cables need to be replaced as they were only designed to last for up to 25 years.

How can you tell if your home needs rewired?

To rewire or not to rewire that, is the question. Did you know that more than 15% of all domestic fires in the UK are caused by electrical faults?

  • A good place to start is the electricity meter and fuse box (now known as the consumer unit). If there is an old-fashioned-style fuse box, with big white ceramic-style fuses, then the chances are that the property needs completely rewiring.
  • When switching on any appliance, you may notice that the lights in the room become dimmer or flicker.
  • If rooms in the home do not have as many power outlets as you require, and you often find that you need to use extension cords, this may signify that your wiring system is out of date. Installing a new system will allow you to have more options when it comes to plugging things in and you won’t overload the system.
  • You have a mix of different socket and switch styles. This could indicate that a partial rewire has taken place. Especially if there is evidence of surface-mounted wiring running along skirting boards and up walls.
  • If your electrical system cannot handle the load, you may find that it trips often.
  • Power outlets that are stained are a very serious issue and could be a fire hazard. The staining occurs as a result of power surges and this should be addressed as soon as possible.
  • Another clue is the colour and style of the cabling. You should be able to find some exposed cables at light fittings, around the fuse box. Modern electrical wiring has PVC insulating cable and should be either white or grey.

It is also important to keep in mind that if any alterations have been made to your existing system, this may require your old wiring to be updated.

Furthermore, any changes that are made need to conform to building regulations.
